Thank you to Brian Davies

We are very grateful to Brian Davies who has stepped down from being Chair of Trustees after six years in the role.

His Chairmanship oversaw a period of growth for Hospices of Hope, including the opening of the Bucharest Hospice, the establishment of a hospice network in Moldova and incorporating Albania as a new country partner.

2018 Hospice Champions Award

Well done to Ancuta and Quintin

At our Edinburgh Opera Dinner last year, Graham awarded Ancuta Nite and Quintin Doyle our 2018 Champions Award for their commitment to, and support for, Hospices of Hope.

Ancuta and Quintin are longstanding supporters who have volunteered on summer trips and use their musical talents to raise money for us. Last year they held a series of concerts - the Stonehouse Sessions - to support us. The concerts raised an amazing £7,055 for our work.

In addition Ancuta travelled to Romania to accompany Neil Latchman at the Copaceni Opening Ceremony. She also accompanied Neil at our Opera Dinner in Scotland where they were joined by members of the chamber choir from the Stewart’s Melville School. Quintin was a speaker at the event.

A much-deserved award.

Volunteer for one of our 2019 Summer Trips

We are once again running our summer trips to Romania and we would love you to join us.

We will be holding three clubs for hospice patients and their carers and two clubs for children who have relatives in the Brasov or Bucharest Hospices or have experienced the loss of a close relative.

Last year we were able to provide a week of fun and relaxation for 265 beneficiaries (children and their parents/carers). The children have so many problems in their lives and it is wonderful to see them mixing with friends, singing, dancing and playing games.

The trips are between seven and ten days long and start on 28th June. If you would like to know more about volunteering please see our summer 2019 brochure, our website or contact [email protected].

Our summer trips were featured in the Times as one of the top 20 Great Escape Gap-yearTrips. Videos showing highlights of previous trips are on our website and on YouTube.

“The Brasov Holiday Club provided us with so many amazing memories.

The kids were incredible and taught us many valuable lessons. Their outlook on life and their positivity made us smile every day.

One of the funniest moments of the trip was making up and performing our super hero dance routine. There was only one dancer in our team which made the process even more hilarious however, we were all still committed to the challenge!

The Brasov Holiday Club was the highlight of our summer and is an experience we will never forget!”

Medical supplies

Thanks to donations from both individuals and companies we continue to ship medical supplies to Albania, Moldova and Romania.

In total we shipped just under 6,000 kilos of supplies to these three countries last year.

The donations make a huge difference to the hospice patients. Wigs, breast prostheses and stoma supplies are particularly appreciated.

Significant donations included an oxygen machine which we sent to Moldova and lymphoma equipment which we sent to Albania.

Please see our website for a list of supplies and medicines that we accept.

Your money goes further

Because costs in the countries we work in are much lower than in the UK, money goes much further.

For example an annual salary in euros for a doctor is 7,080 in Albania, 10,000 in Moldova, 13,000 in Serbia and 24,350 in Romania. Nurses salaries are just 4,680 euros in Albania and the costs incurred by the hospice for a homecare visit in Albania is 20 euros, 37 euros in Romania and 50 euros in Serbia.

Volunteers

We are very grateful to all our volunteers who work so hard to help us run these shops. Their contribution is amazing and we really value everything they do for us.

If you would be interested in volunteering in any of our shops why not drop in and talk to the manager about ways in which you can help. You will be made very welcome and you will be helping us support patients in desperate need of hospice care.

A wide selection of items in our shops

Did you know our shops stock a variety of items including designer clothes, good quality furniture and bric-a-brac a well as a selection of gifts?
