Our work Media News The Atlantic 4 The “toughest rowing challenge” A team of four is taking part in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge and rowing the Atlantic to raise money for our unique children's centre, Copaceni. The challenge starts on 12th December 2017 and the team will row from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua, a distance of nearly 3,000 miles. The team is led by former Romanian popstar turned triathlete, Andrei Rosu. Andrei has run 7 marathons and 7 ultra marathons on 7 continents and is now turning his attention to rowing. His team members are Vasile Osean, Marius Alexe and Ionut Olteanu. The group is the first Romanian crew to take on the Atlantic Challenge. The team has been in constant training and rowed across the Black Sea in the summer to simulate the first 7–8 days of the race which will be the toughest period when their bodies will be adjusting to the demands. They have had to bulk up to overcome the weight loss they will experience during the race. They face massive physical and psychological battles in the crossing. Their boat is just seven metres long and two metres wide, with only a small cabin for protection against storms. They will have to overcome sleep deprivation, salt sores and extreme physical demands. We will be following the team’s progress during the race and updating this page and our social media pages to keep you informed. The team has been sponsored by Kaufland and is hoping to raise 500,000 Romanian Lei (about £95,000). If you would like to support Andrei, Vasile, Marius and Ionut please click here.
