Imagine being told that your child has a severe and life-limiting illness such as cystic fibrosis or muscular dystrophy. Your world changes for ever.

In the Bucharest area of Romania there are more than 5,000 families facing this situation.

These families also have to deal with:

  • knowing that the health care system cannot provide suitable care for their child
  • becoming a full time carer in a country where the benefits system is very complex
  • the threat of losing their home because they can no longer earn enough to pay the rent
  • the anxiety of knowing that their child may struggle to be accepted by society and to integrate into the state school system.

To help these children and their families we are opening a unique centre in Copaceni outside Bucharest. The centre will provide treatment and therapies for the children. The children can stay in the centre for short periods giving both them and their families some respite time.

We will help the families with benefit claims and other practical concerns such as housing issues.

For those families who are in greatest need and facing homelessness we will offer short term temporary emergency accommodation until more permanent housing can be found.
