New Hospice Centre for Serbia -  Appeal

Help us build Serbia’s first hospice centre

The project

BELhospice is developing a hospice centre in Belgrade, Serbia.

At present BELhospice’s services are limited to home visits and education and training because their existing premises are not suitable for patients.

BELhospice is therefore planning to open a purpose built hospice centre in Belgrade. This will allow it to extend the services it offers to terminally ill patients. It will be the first centre of its kind in the country.

The project is being divided into two phases.

Phase 1

Phase 1 is the restoration of the building and the introduction of two new services – an out-patients unit and a day-care centre. It will also accommodate the home care team and the education and training department.

The good news is that the costs of the building works have been met and the work has started. It is scheduled to complete in autumn 2018.

Phase 1 building works

Impact of Phase 1

When fully implemented Phase 1 will mean that BELhospice can provide the following services on an annual basis

  • 600 out-patient consultations (NEW)
  • At least 2,000 attendances at the day-care centre (NEW). This service will also help reduce the social isolation that is often felt by cancer sufferers
  • An increase in the number of home visits by 30% (from 1,767 to 2,300 per year)
  • At least 1,000 counselling and bereavement sessions
  • More suitable premises for the home visits team and the education and training department

The Day-Care Centre

The Appeal

The introduction of these new services and the maintenance of the new building mean a significant rise in costs for BELhospice. For example BELhospice will need to recruit at least eight new members of staff for the out-patient unit and the day-care centre. An EU grant will cover these costs until the end of 2018 but, before committing to these increases, BELhospice wants to raise £250,000 to ensure that the following year’s costs are met.

We are therefore launching a joint appeal with BELhospice to raise this money.

If you would like to support this appeal you can choose to either donate or to Buy a Brick.

The new hospice will allow us to provide free end of life care for so many more patients. We will also be able to support many more families who feel helpless seeing their loved ones suffering.

Buy a Brick and Support our Serbian Hospice Centre Appeal

The Buy a Brick Wall in the Hospice Garden

To commemorate this pioneering project buy a “brick” and have your name or the name of a loved one inscribed on our Wall of Hope in the new hospice garden. The wall will be a lasting memorial to the love and generosity of everyone who helped build the first Serbian Hospice Centre.

Each donation of £40 will “Buy a Brick” and will be recorded on the Wall of Hope. Please tell us the name(s) you want on your brick(s) when making your donation.

The Future

Phase 2 of the Hospice Centre

Phase 2 will be the introduction of a purpose-built in-patient unit – the first of its kind in Serbia.

We are in the process of agreeing the design and seeking consents for this Phase. We estimate this phase will cost more than 500,000 euros.

There is no purpose built in-patient hospice in Serbia which means the majority of terminally ill cancer sufferers die in pain and without dignity.

The views of a member from the BELhospice medical team

“My first and biggest dream is to see the opening of the first ever hospice centre in Serbia, after many years of perseverance and hard work by BELhospice.

My second wish is to acquire new skills and experiences in that very hospice which would allow me to better help my patients to live the rest of their lives with dignity and without pain.

My third dream is to have many medical professionals and other professionals involved in hospice care attending our educational programs to spread the philosophy and principles of the modern hospice movement”.

Help us make this dream a reality by donating to our appeal.
