Getting involved with Hospices of Hope

Originally from Romania, I started my collaboration with Hospices of Hope back in Oct 2010, by volunteering for the Bucharest
Marathon. I stood out by scolding the police officers for letting journalists break the barrier at the finish line! A few months later, having found myself between jobs, I became a full time volunteer for all their fundraising events, until Jan 2012 when I moved to France.

When I moved to the UK in March 2014, I was able to start volunteering again.

Getting to know Hospices of Hope

I became close friends with Anna Perolls, whose dedication & personal attachment to the cause strengthened even more my support for the charity. Being partial to crafts & handmade items, I've developed many a skill in supporting Hospices of Hope's fundraising efforts: floristry (for making galas' floral arrangements & teaching the Christmas Wreath Making workshops), japanese bauble making for teaching Christmas crafts, Calligraphy for events' placecards, to name a few. I have also enrolled my software developer husband to build their bespoke silent auction app to use at fundraising galas & I used our main life events as opportunity to engage our friends and family in supporting the cause (donations as birthday, engagement & wedding gifts, crafts workshop for the hen party & donations on behalf of our son, as a lockdown virtual baby shower).

Best experiences with Hospices of Hope

One of the best experiences was managing to join one of their summer camps in Romania in 2019 and spend a wonderful week with the patients & their families, alongside the group of UK volunteers. A special memory from this time is related to the Talent Show organised on one of the evenings, where Miruna, one of the patients, read a very powerful essay written by her, in a perfect English language, reminding everyone to cherish what they have and be kinder with their bodies. Keeping my composure while translating her words into
Romanian was very hard. The whole experience was very humbling & remains a most special memory.
