Hospices of Hope Albania is launched

Last summer we reported that we had started work in Albania.

We have now established an office in the capital, Tirana, and Hospices of Hope Albania was officially launched on 9th July this year. The launch event took place at the Grand Hotel and Spa in Tirana.

More than 70 people attended. Guests included His Excellency Duncan Norman the British Ambassador to Albania and representatives from the Romanian and Japanese Embassies.

The Hospices of Hope Network in Albania

Hospices of Hope Albania will be developing and supporting a national network of palliative care organisations. The work is based on our model in Moldova.

The network in Albania currently comprises two mobile multidisciplinary teams run by Ryder Albania in Tirana and Durres and a palliative care day centre developed with ABC Health Centre in Tirana.

We are exploring the possibility of setting up a rural home care team which will be linked to a state hospital and serve a very poor and deprived area.

Our Impact so far

We have helped these teams by:-

  • sending medical supplies from the UK
  • providing funding for medication and medical supplies
  • providing funding for staff salaries
  • covering administrative and transport costs
  • palliative care training
  • providing an app to help with patient communication
  • providing computers for Ryder Albania

The funding for medicines and medical supplies has made a huge difference to the nature of the care that the teams can offer.

Medicor and the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation have been very supportive of this project.

Fundraiser

Hospices of Hope Albania has appointed a fundraiser to generate funds and raise awareness within the country.

Medical Supplies

Hospices of Hope continues to send medical supplies to Albania. So far we have sent 10 pallets of medical supplies (2,122 kgs) to Albania  - all these supplies have been donated to us.

Computers donated by Hospices of Hope

Rudi from Ryder Albania describes how the new computers have helped Ryder Albania

“Before the new computers arrived we only had three desktop computers. We had to arrange and plan how to share these which was an issue as computers have become essential for using the online system for prescribing medicines.

Now each doctor has their own laptop and they can prescribe medicines at any time. They are able to keep
patient records up to date. Having a laptop also means that our nurses and doctors can read online articles and other information about palliative care."
