WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP
The poverty December 1989 saw the Romanian peoples’ revolution end 40 years of brutal dictatorship under Nicolae Ceaucescu. Despite the many advances that have been made since then, much of the country still suffers from that devastating legacy. 45% of the population still live in poverty and if you have a terminal illness you are often sent home from hospital alone, without any support or relief from pain and suffering. This is typical of the countries in this region of Europe.
The need is immense To improve the quality of life for another country’s terminally ill citizens may seem a daunting task, but that is exactly what Hospices of Hope is doing. We have already provided care for over 7,000 patients in Romania since 1992, and building on the success of establishing Hospice Casa Sperantei in Brasov, we have started to provide the training, coordination, advice and financial support required to establish other hospice organisations in Romania and the surrounding countries. However, the need is immense. In Romania alone there are 41,000 deaths from cancer every year and an estimated 10,000 adults and children with HIV/AIDS.
Why Must We Continue our work?
We need to reach more It has been so rewarding to see how hospice care has developed so successfully in Brasov. Patients, whether in their own home, in the beautiful new adult in-patient unit and day centre, or in the bright and cheerful Bagpuss Children’s wing, are full of gratitude for the excellent care they receive. But we need to reach more patients in Romania and the surrounding countries, who still have no access to specialist services and continue to face severe hardship.
How Can You Make a Difference? The need is immense
Then we need to ‘shine the light’ into other areas of Romania and the surrounding countries by:
It’s a big task, but with your help we can succeed.
